　　约翰．卡彭特导演的这部科幻片并没有强调特技噱头，反而将重心放在异乡人的主题上，而且拍出了相当浪漫动人的气氛，甚至可以将它当作一部取外星人为主角的文艺片来欣赏。杰夫．布里奇斯饰演一名纯真的外星人，他的宇宙飞船被地救人击落，掉在威斯康辛州的荒野。他负伤来到新近丧偶的寡妇凯伦艾的家中，并且借用她丈夫的身体来延续生命。在学习地球人的生活方式过程中，他跟寡妇发生了感情。外星人的救援队将在三天后到达亚历桑纳州接他回外层空间，他需要寡妇开车送他到那里。地球上的两位政府官员也接获讯息，他们决定不管生死都要捉住外星人，因而引发了一场精彩的拉锯战。
